Photo of the main house on Oakwood Plantation before it was torn down. David Hunt originally owned the plantation (he probably got it either from his Uncle Abijah Hunt's estate or from his wife Ann's family - the Dunbars - but no one knows which). David and Ann Hunt gave the plantation to their daughter Mary Ann when she married James Archer in 1836. The house was the residence of Mary Ann (Hunt) and James Archer on Oakwood Plantation. James ran a school on his plantation for the children from Church Hill and Selzertown from 1840 to 1860 and also after the Civil War for an income. There is a new home built on the site of the original house and the plantation is now owned by the Prosperes. The original photo also belongs to them. US GenWeb Project
In 1996, a group of genealogists organized the Kentucky Comprehensive Database. The idea was to provide a single entry point for all counties in Kentucky, where collect databases would be stored. In addition, the databases would be indexed and cross-linked, so that even if an individual were found in more than one county, they could be located in the index. At the same time, volunteers were found to coordinate the collection of databases and generally oversee the contents of the web page.
I am the County Coordinator for Jefferson County, Mississippi, Ann Geoghegan. I would like to take this opportunity to give a special thank you to Carolyn Switzer who has been the County Coordinator for this site for many years. Carolyn has taken over as Adams County Coordinator so if you need her, you can still visit! I welcome all contributions and suggestions. Just drop me an email and I'll get right back to you. Together we can make this site something special and beneficial to all.

All the data you see on these pages was donated by unpaid volunteers who do it for the love of family history research. Sometimes the data is easily accessible in air conditioned offices in county courthouses staffed with friendly, helpful clerks. More often old records are in dank, dusty basements where mold and mildew flourish and there is no light and no place to even sit down, and the volunteer may be forgotten by the clerks who are busy upstairs at their brightly lighted desks. Or the data is gathered by a volunteer who spends his vacation in rural Mississippi in the summertime braving near 100 degree heat, unbearable humidity, and all manner of critters including mosquitoes and snakes just to get to a cemetery, which may or may not be on a recognizable road. These pages are not possible without their help. Thank you all! Without you there would be no Jefferson County Site! |
