February 14, 2007 - Began a total update of the entire site.  Please bear with me until it is done.  I think you will like it. I will leave the old table of contents in place until everything is completed.

January 19, 2007 - Began cleanup of marriage database - it is now much faster loading and cleaner looking.   Posted a photo of the Fayette Academy Class of 193?  and a photo of the Fayette Academy - both contributed by Dr. Walter Dawkins.   Also began transcribing returns for various years of the Masonic Records - contributed by Charles Dawkins.  The ones available now are:

November 27, 2006 - Added wonderful article and photographs of the Thomas Hinds Masonic Lodge contributed by Charles Dawkins - Masons 1 - Presbyterians 0!

September 28, 2006 - Added  Excerpts from the Slave Petitions to the Mississippi Legislature - transcribed and contributed by Janice Rice Stevens.  The records deal mostly with emancipations.  A real treasure trove for African-American Researchers!

June 8, 2006 - Began a page for Woodlawn Plantation - Beginning to receive a lot of information on this plantation, one of the oldest in the county.  Watch for additions to this page! First item is the Slave Narrative of Peter Brown, born at Woodlawn in 1852.

 

March 29, 2006 - Added  Civil War Letters from John Cato to his wife, Martha Newman Cato contributed by Linda Durr Rudd.  I must apologize to Linda for the delay in getting these up she submitted them some time ago and they just got lost in the shuffle of my absent-minded brain!

 

March 29, 2006 - Added 1805 Census of the Territory for Jefferson County

 

March 6, 2006 - Changed the picture on the index page to some photos of Rodney and asked for all visitors to contact the Supervisors and the MDAH Department of Historic Preservation to help us get the road to Rodney more accessible and easier to find!  Please help us make one of the oldest towns in MS accessible to the public!

 

February 27, 2006 - Added Freedman Savings & Trust Company 1865-1874 Register of signatures of depositors born in Jefferson County.  These records are available on Microfilm through your Local Family History Center from the main library in Salt Lake City, Utah. If you find a relative, let me know and I will look up the record and tell you all the information on the card. This is truly one of the great resources for African-American researchers. Contributed by Ann Allen Geoghegan.

 

January 13, 2006 - Added Petition of Andrew Barland to the Mississippi General Assembly  circa, 1824, found by Sue B. Moore and used with permission of the University of North Carolina. The original is in the Mississippi Department of Archives and History in Jackson.

 

November 10, 2005 - Added the long awaited research paper by Andy McMillion on the Hunt Family of Jefferson County.  The Hunts were some of the earliest residents of the area, arriving when we were still Pickering County.  It is a long read but an excellent one!  Many thanks Andy!

 

April 13, 2005 - Added three new links on the Family Web Sites Page - Family of Henry Nichols The Past Whispers  "Home of the Battle of Seven Pines" and many other great pages and  My Great-Grandfather's Attic  Surnames: Garrett, Dawkins, Warren, Jackson.

January 27, 2005 - Have a great year everybody! I updated the look of the site!  Also added Why We Do Genealogy by Jan Philpot and updated 20th Century Wars to include losses from Operation Iraqi Freedom!

 

October 25, 2004 - Added a page for Masonic History in Jefferson County.  If anyone has any history or stories of the Lodges in Jefferson County please send them to me!

 

October 1, 2004 - Added a list of Plantations and Tracts in Jefferson County which were abstracted from a map which was made in 1941 by Edgar Tobin Aerial Surveys. A very special thank you goes to the late Everette Truly for sharing this priceless data with Ann Brown before his death and  to our "Resident Jefferson Researcher" for her wonderful contribution of this list.  Thanks "Anebec" from all of us!

 

June 30, 2004 - Added a wonderful Oration by Dr. John Savage delivered on the 4th of July, 1837 at Rodney, MS.  Contributed by James W. Norris

 

May 29, 2004 - At long last Mari Byers has contributed some of the contents of her great-grandmother's scrapbook!  What a treasure!  See the Harper Pages!  Thanks bunches to Mari and her 5-year-old granddaughter Taylor Sullivan who helped her!

 

May 16, 2004 - Added a list of Possible Confederates Buried in Union Church Cemetery - compiled by George Purvis (better known as gpthelastrebel !)

 

April 25, 2004 - Added a Letter from Mr. John Ker to the Mississippi State Legislature regarding the wills of Captain Isaac Ross and his daughter Mrs. M. A. Reed - December 15, 1841. This concerned the transportation of his slaves to the Liberian Colony by Captain Ross and his daughter. Very interesting reading!

 

April 20, 2004 - Added a wonderful photograph of some Rodney Natives who attended the Rodney Presbyterian Church.  The photo originally appeared in the Jackson Clarion Ledger but unfortunately we don't know the date.  If anyone knows when this wonderful photo was taken please let me know! Submitted by George Blair.  Thanks, George!

March 6, 2004 - Added the Diary of Walter Bisland Wade.  Contributed by Kevin Ross Richlin.  (This document requires Adobe Acrobat Reader)  This is a wonderful glimpse of life in Jefferson County during the "Gay Nineties"!

 

March 5, 2004 - Thanks to Kevin Ross Richlin we now have the Susan Sillers Darden Diary in *Adobe PDF format!  Kevin is the grandson of Jewell Ross who originally typed the diary into its present format in 1978.  Many thanks to Kevin!  *(Requires Acrobat Reader) Don't have it? February 18, 2004 - Added the Roster and Muster Roll of Darden's Battery prepared by James Vaughan.  This is an excellent piece of work and should be helpful to everyone with an ancestor in the Jefferson Artillery!

October 26, 2003 - With so many contributions of newspapers and newspaper articles coming in to the Jefferson County MSGenWeb Project I decided it might be a good idea to centralize them. So with that in mind, I have started a new project called:  The Jefferson County MSGenWeb Newspaper Transcription Project

Added a link to the Church Hill Cemetery-Christ Church  Transcription. (which for some reason, was sent to Adams County MSGenWeb!)

and last but certainly not least:  Added  A Way Of Life - a chapter from “A History of Jefferson County”, a thesis prepared in 1960 for a Master of Arts in the Department of History at Mississippi College by Nancy L. Norton. I have been given the whole thesis and will be putting it online one chapter at a time.

September 4, 2003 - Old Tavern Licenses in Jefferson County, contributed by Al Whitehead of Henderson, TX.   This covers the years 1811, 1812 and1813.  Al is a descendant of James Whitehead, one of the first Tavern Keepers in Old Greenville and  also one of the first Constables.

 

September 3, 2003 - Added latest edition of The Facts Unravel #3 by Bruce D. Liddell

 

August 31, 2003 - Added The 1869 Freedmen Tax Roll - copied by Ann Brown in 1977 from the Jefferson County Tax Records.  Also added the 1830 Free People of Color and 1850 Free People of Color from the Jefferson County Census. This was also compiled and contributed by Ann Brown.   Should be a big boost for African-American Research in Jefferson County! Thanks, Ann

July 31, 2003 - Added Buell Tavern (later known as Truly Tavern) - contributed by Charles Dawkins from a file he found in the MDAH WPA records for Jefferson County.  Really interesting!

 

July 24, 2003 - Added the rest of the Fayette District and the Red Lick District  to the 1832 Minutes of the Board of Supervisors Assignment of Road Overseers found and contributed by Sue B. Moore.  These have been added to the ones contributed by Ann Brown. Also added Jurors of the Circuit Court, Jefferson County, September Term 1832

contributed by Sue B. Moore. Sue also sent in some Early Court Cases from when the county was still named Pickering!

 

 

July 17, 2003 - Added more Jefferson County Slave Court Records  Also added a HUGE panoramic photo of the Jefferson County Agricultural High School from 1929/1930.  WARNING! This file is VERY large and takes a LONG time to load!

If anyone can identify some of the folks in that class photo, please let me know!  Thanks so much to contributor Judy Valentine for this wonderful glimpse of the past!
